Zentralbahn has seen a steady increase in passenger numbers in recent years and is therefore planning to expand its rolling stock. To meet future storage space requirements, the storage facility in Giswil will be expanded with two new tracks. This measure, which is to be implemented by December 2025, will not only improve storage capacity but also increase safety against natural hazards and modernize the existing cable and signaling systems.

To meet future storage space requirements, the storage facility in Giswil will be expanded with two new tracks. This measure, which is to be implemented by December 2025, will not only improve storage capacity but also increase safety against natural hazards and modernize the existing cable and signaling systems.
Initial situation
In recent years, the number of passengers on the Zentralbahn has risen steadily – with the exception of 2020 – which means that the Zentralbahn will need more rolling stock in the future. A storage concept for 2021 to 2050 also determined the space required for this rolling stock on the north side of Brünig. There is currently a shortfall of around 2.6 km of storage length. In order to be able to store additional vehicles in Giswil in the future, the storage facility must be expanded by two new tracks.
All railway engineering requirements can be met to the east of Giswil station, provided that the facility is protected by a gallery.
