Renovation of the Meiringen workshop from 2024 to 2026
Zentralbahn is launching a comprehensive modernisation project in Meiringen to upgrade its multiple-unit fleet through midlife refits to the latest state of the art. Further information can be found on this page.
Gorgen Giswil parking facility 2024 to 2026
In recent years, Zentralbahn has recorded a steady increase in passenger numbers and is therefore planning to expand its fleet. To meet future requirements for stabling capacity, the facility in Giswil will be extended by two additional tracks. This project, which is scheduled for completion by December 2025, will not only optimise stabling capacity but also improve protection against natural hazards and modernise the existing cabling and signalling systems.
Construction projects in the Bernese Oberland, fall 2025
In autumn 2025, Zentralbahn will carry out several major construction projects between Meiringen and Interlaken Ost. Brienzwiler station will be modernised, the line in the Aare delta will be refurbished, and a new passing loop will be built in Niederried. During the full line closure from 13 October to 21 December 2025, replacement bus services will operate.
New operations building in Stansstad from 2025
The new operations building at Bahnhofstrasse 25 will replace the ageing building at Bahnhofstrasse 21. Construction work is expected to begin in spring 2025. Further information about the project can be found on the construction project page.
Renovation of Brienz station building from 2025 to 2026
The historic Brienz station building is being comprehensively renovated and prepared for the future. In addition to the energy-efficient refurbishment of the façade and the installation of modern building services, an expanded travel centre will be created, bringing together services from Swiss Post, BLS Shipping and the Brienz Rothorn Railway under one roof. This marks an important step towards greater comfort, sustainability and service quality at Brienz station.
Construction projects in Engelberg Valley, fall 2026
In autumn 2026, Zentralbahn will carry out several construction projects in the Engelberg Valley. The line between Stansstad and Engelberg will be closed from 7 September to 18 October 2026. The section between Wolfenschiessen and Engelberg will remain closed until 1 November 2026. Replacement bus services will operate.
