End of the world.
Enjoyable moments close by.
Where is the end of the world? In Siberia? At the North Cape? On Mount Everest? All wrong. The real end of the world is in the idyllic Horbistal valley near Engelberg. If you walk there, you won't end up in the middle of nowhere, but in the middle of enjoyment: at the Ende der Welt restaurant.
Walk with an idyllic destination
From Engelberg train station, walk through the village center and continue uphill between the school and the cemetery, then turn right at Buechli onto Grottenweg. With sweeping views over the valley, the path leads through a peaceful wooded area. Climb the few steps to the Lourdes grotto and you will find a quiet, contemplative place. Ideal for a break. Breathe in. Exhale.
Continue through the shady forest to Horbisstrasse. Cross the road and the bridge over the Bärenbach stream and follow the path to the left of the Marien-chapel to the Restaurant Ende der Welt. The name is no marketing gimmick: the valley basin behind Horbis is actually called “End of the World” by locals.
After about an hour, you will reach the charming restaurant. The family-run business is a cozy oasis with a garden restaurant, dining room, and playground. There's no apocalypse here, just honest cuisine made with love: homemade Älplermagronen, juicy schnitzels, seasonal specialties, and regional game in the fall. Add a glass of wine, a view of the countryside, and the feeling that you want to stay a little longer. All's well that ends well.
