In brief
Various sub-projects are being implemented on the route between Meiringen and Interlaken Ost. In Meiringen, the superstructure of the track system between the station exit and Hausenstrasse is being renovated and the final stage of the total renovation of Junzlen is being carried out. In Brienzwiler, the entire station area will be rebuilt, in Brienz the last section of the line from Hegerweg to Brienz station will be renovated, in Niederried a new crossing will be installed, and in Interlaken Ost part of the track system will be rebuilt. Due to these construction works, the line between Meiringen and Interlaken Ost will be closed from October 13 to December 21, 2025.
Renovation work on the individual subprojects
The superstructure between the entrance to Meiringen station and the Stickli 1 level crossing (Hausenstrasse) will be renewed over a length of approximately 700 meters. At the same time, a switch in this section will be replaced and the Stickli 1 and Liechtenen 1 level crossings will be brought up to the current standard.
The single-track railway line between Meiringen and Brienzwiler, which is located in the Hasliaare floodplain, is undergoing extensive renovation. Due to regular flooding and erosion of the existing railway embankment and superstructure caused by heavy rain and flooding, the infrastructure of the railway line is in need of renewal. This also has a negative impact on the agricultural land behind it. The line is therefore being renovated in two stages. The first stage (lots 1 and 3) of the construction work was already completed in 2022/2023, while the second stage (Junzlen–Unterbach) is being implemented during this total closure.
The objectives of the construction project include flood protection for the railway infrastructure, with the railway line being raised to a higher level in line with requirements from the Hasliaare flood protection project of the Canton of Bern. To this end, the railway embankment will be raised and a protective wall installed upstream to implement the objectives of the Hasliaare flood protection project. In addition, the entire track (superstructure and substructure) and the catenary systems will be replaced. The new catenary masts will be placed on the side facing away from the river.
In order to exploit synergies, the Hirssi Bridge replacement project in the municipality of Meiringen will be carried out at the same time and in close cooperation. The new bridge is also scheduled to be completed by the end of the total closure.
The Brienzwiler station will be adapted to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (BehiG), and the entire track and all electrical systems will also be renewed. As part of the renovation work, barrier-free access for people with limited mobility will be created. To this end, a new outdoor platform with an underpass will be built on the river side.
In addition, the entire station square will be upgraded to ensure better connections between trains and buses. Most of this work will take place after the total closure, which is why there may still be certain restrictions around Brienzwiler station even after the total closure.
Following the successful renovation of a 2.1-kilometer section of track in 2022/2023, the upcoming work will focus on renewing the final section of approximately 990 meters between Hegerweg and the entrance to Brienz station. This will involve renewing the track, refurbishing the substructure and superstructure, rebuilding embankments and service roads, and adapting the track drainage system. In addition, catenary work will be carried out between Gurgenbach and Brienz station. Furthermore, the sleepers will be replaced between the Brienz tunnel and the level Crossing.
A new crossing point is being built at Niederried station, which has several objectives. It is crucial for the smooth running of the seasonal Lucerne–Interlaken Express trains and will help to improve operational stability. It will also support infrastructure maintenance journeys and enable additional connections such as relief trains or extra journeys.
As part of the renovation work, barrier-free access for people with limited mobility will also be created in Niederried, and the comfort and functionality for all passengers will be improved by renovating the customer facilities. The project is also upwardly compatible and meets the requirements for a possible second platform in the future.
The construction project in the Interlaken Ost station area aims to renovate the Zentralbahn facilities and bring them up to the latest technical standards in order to meet requirements and ensure smooth operations. This involves completely renovating station tracks 3 and 4 as well as the track leading to the Aare bridge. In addition, the electrical systems will be renovated and upgraded.
In order to continue to ensure the stability and safety of the Kirchet and Cheisten tunnels, the vaults and water ingress points were repaired in December 2024. During the total closure between Meiringen and Innertkirchen from November 3 to 30, 2025, the temporary catenary will be replaced by a ceiling conductor rail.
Further information on this construction site can be found on the page Renovation of the Kirchet and Cheisten tunnels until 2025.

Trains will run on the entire route according to the new timetable (timetable change). The installation sites and construction tracks will be gradually dismantled. The necessary follow-up work on the structures and recultivation work will take place.
Restrictions and inconveniences
Zentralbahn plans its construction projects on a long-term basis. Where possible, these projects are combined and implemented in short, intensive construction phases with very compact construction programs. Total closures are unavoidable, as they make it possible to minimize the impact on residents and travelers and limit it to a specific period of time. At the same time, occupational safety and quality are increased.
Immission / construction noise
Zentralbahn's construction work usually takes place during the closure from Monday to Saturday between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. During this time, noisy work is sometimes unavoidable. In order for rail operations to resume, certain work must be completed by the end of the total closure. Therefore, depending on the progress of construction, work may be necessary on Sundays and at night.
The following working hours are planned:
Interlaken Ost From November 4 to December 21, 2025, work will be carried out in two shifts, Monday to Saturday between 5:00 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. Exception: The finishing work on the overhead lines will be carried out on Sunday, December 14, 2025. Reserve date: If necessary, the remaining tamping and leveling work will take place on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
Niederried
From October 3 to December 21, 2025, work will be carried out in two shifts, Monday to Saturday between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
Aaredelta
Monday to Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Brienzwiler
Monday to Saturday, 5:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Exception: On Saturday, November 29, and Sunday, November 30, 2025, tamping work will be carried out during the day between Talguet and Brienzwiler station.
Junzlen
Monday to Saturday 4:00 a.m. to 10:45 p.m.
Information about overnight work is also available on the resident information page.
Helicopter operations
Access to some sections is challenging. For this reason, helicopters are used for isolated tasks such as the installation of catenary masts.
You will be informed of the exact time slots in due course. We kindly ask you to remove or secure any loose objects or light materials (e.g., clothing, tarpaulins, cardboard boxes, flower pots) near the railway line and to keep parasols and awnings closed or retracted.
The following operations are planned:
- Interlaken Ost: October 13–14, 2025, and October 29, 2025 (no reserve date)
- Niederried: October 14, 2025, and November 25, 2025 (no reserve date)
- Brienzwiler/Aaredelta: This applies to individual days between October 20 and 24, 2025, as well as November 25 to 28, 2025, and December 1 to 5, 2025. These are day assignments.
Rail replacement service
During the total closure from October 13 to December 21, 2025, rail replacement buses will run between Meiringen and Interlaken Ost. Please allow for longer travel times. In order to ensure connections, please note that some departure times and departure points have changed.
During the total closure between Meiringen and Innertkirchen from November 3 to 30, 2025, rail replacement buses will also run, but the Aareschlucht West and Innertkirchen Unterwasser stops will not be served. The replacement buses will also stop at Willigen Dorf, Innertkirchen Winkel, and Innertkirchen Grimseltor.
Details on the rail replacement service between Meiringen and Interlaken Ost can be found on the Meiringen–Interlaken Ost and Meiringen–Innertkirchen Kraftwerk line closure pages, as well as in the online timetable at SBB.ch or in the SBB Mobile app.
Road closure in Sytenwald
The road through Sytenwald has been closed since June 27, 2025. The closure is expected to last until spring 2026, depending on the completion of follow-up work. The aim is to reopen the road as soon as possible – as soon as construction work has been completed.
Reason for the closure
Due to the limited space available in the construction area, construction tracks and small storage areas in Sytenwald are unavoidable. To ensure the safety of passers-by and employees, the construction site area must be closed.
Why is the closure taking so long?
- The construction site is difficult to access, which slows down construction progress.
- Construction tracks and storage areas must be set up in the forest, while minimizing the impact on nature.
- Nature conservation requirements, such as spawning seasons and reptile protection, determine the timing of individual work.
- Agricultural requirements must also be taken into account.
Clarifications and alternatives
- A path for pedestrians and cyclists alongside the construction track was considered. However, this was not feasible due to the protected floodplain area.
- The municipality of Meiringen approved the closure in December 2024 on condition that the path be kept open on weekends until the end of June 2025.
Diversions and signage
- The diversion is signposted.
- Bicycle route no. 381 is diverted to routes 8 and 9.
- All closures and diversions are also listed on SwitzerlandMobility (cycling and hiking trails).
Railway crossing closure
The Strickli 1 railway crossing will be closed from 5:00 a.m. on December 1 to 7:00 a.m. on December 3, 2025, due to reconstruction work.
Further information
Construction site traffic will contribute to increased traffic volumes, which may lead to short-term delays. We apologize for any inconvenience. The construction sites will be cordoned off by the construction companies. In the interests of your safety, we ask that you respect the barriers.
Access to adjacent properties is guaranteed, but delays are to be expected. Where necessary, diversions will be signposted. Railway crossings may be temporarily closed. Affected residents will be informed in good time.
If hiking trails or cycle paths are affected by closures, diversions will be signposted and posted on SwitzerlandMobility.
